Itinerary
Discover the beauty of North Sumatra on a 5-day journey combining rainforest trekking, orangutan encounters, scenic highlands, and the unique Batak culture of Lake Toba.
From exploring the jungle in Bukit Lawang to discovering traditional villages on Samosir Island, this journey offers a wonderful introduction to Sumatra’s nature, landscapes, and local life.
Day 1 – Medan Airport to Bukit Lawang
Upon arrival at Kuala Namu International Airport (KNO), you will meet your driver and begin the journey to Bukit Lawang. The drive takes approximately 4–5 hours, passing through Binjai and local villages along the way.
After arriving in Bukit Lawang, check in to your accommodation and enjoy some free time to relax after your journey. You can take a refreshing swim in the river or enjoy a peaceful walk through the nearby village.

Day 2 – Orangutan Jungle Trekking in Bukit Lawang
After breakfast, meet your local English-speaking guide at around 9:00 AM and prepare for a full day exploring the tropical rainforest of Gunung Leuser National Park.
The trek takes approximately 6–7 hours, including breaks, as you walk through the lush jungle in search of Sumatran Orangutans and other fascinating wildlife. Depending on luck and natural conditions, you may encounter Thomas leaf monkeys, gibbons, and long-tailed macaques.
During the trek, you will stop to enjoy a simple jungle lunch and fresh tropical fruit surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.
In the afternoon, return to Bukit Lawang by traditional tube rafting along the river.

Day 3 – Bukit Lawang to Lake Toba via Berastagi
After breakfast, depart for Lake Toba, travelling through the scenic highlands of Berastagi.
Along the way, stop at the local fruit market to discover the region’s fresh tropical produce. Continue to the spectacular Sipiso-piso Waterfall viewpoint, where you can admire the impressive waterfall and panoramic views of Lake Toba.
In the afternoon, arrive at the lakeside area and cross the lake by ferry to Samosir Island.
Check in to your accommodation and enjoy a relaxing evening on the island.

Day 4 – Explore Samosir Island and Batak Culture
After breakfast, spend the day discovering the cultural heritage and beautiful landscapes of Samosir Island.
Visit Ambarita Village, known for its traditional Batak stone structures and cultural history. Continue to Simanindo to explore the Batak Museum and, subject to the local performance schedule, watch a traditional Batak dance performance.
You can also visit a local village where traditional ulos fabrics, the distinctive woven textiles of the Batak people, are made.
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before returning to your accommodation in the afternoon. The rest of the day is free to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of Lake Toba.
Overnight on Samosir Island.
Day 5 – Samosir Island to Medan Airport
After breakfast, begin your return journey towards Medan and Kuala Namu International Airport (KNO).
Please allow sufficient travel time when arranging your departure flight, as the journey from Lake Toba to the airport can take several hours and may involve a ferry crossing.
Your 5-day Sumatra adventure comes to an end, leaving you with memories of the rainforest, wildlife, mountain scenery, and the cultural heritage of North Sumatra.
